Antefixes are carved terracotta ornaments that used to terminate the covering tiles of the roof of a tiled roof. In grand buildings the face of each stone antefix was richly carved, often with the anthemion ornament. They appeared in Greek buildings at the late 1800’s early 1900’s and they were inspired by ancient Greece.
This beautiful antique Greek Antefix is a typical example of the 1900’s- 1930’s. During this period antefixes were decorated with an anthemion and a beardless male portrait. It is said that the male face decorating the antefix, represents god Hermes. This kind of antefix is characterized by numerous Greek pop art elements.
It is in good antique condition with traces of time typical of its age.
